Terrific Die Cut Techniques: Manual Dies that Emboss,Cut and Stencil

Today I tried my first ever Spellbinder Die that Embosses, Cuts and Stencils too. I have been wanting to try this type of die cut and finally bought some this week. (Psst…Tuesday Morning Stores have a bunch of Spellbinder Die Sets for only $6.99 usually MSRP of $24.99, so how could I resist?)

For my project today, I selected the Wings of Hope Die set.  I just loved those filigree butterflies on this set.

There are instructions for how to use the die set with different die cut machines (Spellbinders Grand Caliber, Cuttlebug, Big Shot/BigKick) on the inside of the packaging to tell you what sequence to stack the cutting plates, die and your material you want to cut/emboss/stencil).

1. I used some Coordinations cardstock in bright pink.  I first followed the directions to cut the paper with the butterfly image using the recommended stacking of materials (cutting plates, die, material).

2. I popped out the cardstock from the die and flipped it over and placed the die on top of the now cut butterfly and sprayed with some Gold Color Shine Spray Mists by Heidi Swap using the stenciling part of the die.  Tip: Be sure and wash off your die right away after using spray mists or inks as a stencil.

3. I recommend you use a paper piercer or other tool to punch out the small die cut pieces from within the image.

4. I put the cut and stenciled butterfly image back on the die with the stenciled side against the die. This time I used the recommended stacking of materials to emboss the image. Tip: Please note, the STACKING IS DIFFERENT for each type of die step you are making…cutting, embossing, stenciling. (sorry for the slightly blurry photo)

5. Now you have a beautifully cut, embossed and stenciled image to use on a project. These dies created a gorgeous piece just out of cardstock and some ink.

6. Now that my butterfly was ready to be used on a project, I decided to make a quick card with it.  I added some black stickles to the body of the butterfly and some rhinestones. Spellbinder Wings of Hope Card

So have you ever used dies like these?  I really liked the added texture it adds with the embossing and stenciling to the die cut shape and made my quick card look extra special.
