Day 9: 25 Days of Christmas Projects Inspiration

25 days of Christmas

Welcome to Day 9 of 25 Days of Christmas Project Inspiration:

A Gift for Him or Her

Everyone loves their pets, right? If you are stuck for what to give someone who has a pet, how about making them a customized set of 4 Drink Coasters. They are easy to make and only require a few supplies. Actually, you can use this tutorial to make any image theme you like !

Drink Tile Coasters Tutorial:

1. Purchase glazed tiles from your local hardware or tile store.  I purchased white 4X4 tiles at Lowes.  They were only 44 cents each.  I also picked up some little rubber feet to put on the bottom of the tiles when completed.  You can also use adhesive backed cork which can be bought at hardware store or local craft stores.

2. Clean the tiles off to remove tile dust.  I use a glass cleaning product and paper towels. This is an important so don’t skip it.

3. Select the images you want to use on your tiles.  I found these adorable Love Paw by Snapdragon Snippets and I Love My Dog by Imaginisce images in the Silhouette Online store to use.  You can use any die cut machine and find other appropriate images for your own theme. .

4. Since I used my Silhouette Cameo, I laid the images out on the Silhouette mat and grouped shapes by what color I wanted them cut.

5. Place the vinyl colors on your mat in appropriate location to cut the images. Cut the vinyl on a kiss cut, which on Silhouette is Blade 2, Speed 8, Thickness 9. I used Square 1 Permanent Adhesive Backed Fabric. It is super easy to work since if it folds up on itself while I am applying I can just fold it back down…can’t do that with regular vinyl. Plus it comes in about 80 luscious colors.

6. Weed images (which means remove the parts you are not going to use). Tip: I like to use a pick tool to make weeding easier.  And I always have a scrapper tool to help me apply product smoothly.  You can also use an old credit card if you don’t have a scrapper.

7. Apply the base image on the tile first.  For this design it was the brown dog paw. I centered it on the tile.  I don’t measure it out and just eyeball it but you can certainly be more precise if you prefer.

8. Layer the heart image on the paw print. This is a big image so I just peeled it off the backing and layered it in place.  I just smoothing it out with my hands. That’s the great thing about using Square 1…I could never do that with regular vinyl !

layer heart on paw 9.  Add the paw pad prints to the top of the paw base.  I like to use transfer tape when I have several like pieces to layer on top of a base image such as these paw pads.

10. Here is the finished base of the paw print layered.

10. I added the name of the dog across the heart using transfer tape. I just centered it across the heart.

11. Repeat the same thing for the other tiles.  I made three of the individual dog tiles and one other tile to complete the set of 4 tiles. I added the word ‘my” to the original image.

12. I added the little rubber feet to the bottom (which I found by the picture hanging materials at the hardware store).  Like I mentioned before, you can also apply adhesive backed cork or even felt to the back instead to finish off your tiles.  I prefer the little rubber feet so they are easy to clean coaster later. I like to stack up the tiles and tie them together with a pretty ribbon to give the recipient.

See how easy these were to make? I know you must be thinking of a million different themes you could make these for holiday gifts, birthdays, graduation and more.

I was thinking these were larger tiles to be placed underneath their food/water bowls, but the coasters are cute! I guess you could use the Square 1 to apply a rectangular banner to be placed onto a fabric placemat for the food bowl, that way, it could easily be removed when it was time to wash the placemat.
